What it is

Popcorn ceiling removal is not scraping.

How we do it

Water, patience, and a scraper angle that takes the texture off without pulling the drywall with it. Most removal jobs go bad in the first hour — too dry, too aggressive, too fast. We use the right moisture, the right angle, the right scraper.

What you get

A flat ceiling. Skim-coated smooth. Primed and painted. No popcorn, no cracks, no dust on every surface of the house for the next month.

What's included

Our process — 8 steps

Step 01

Asbestos test

Florida homes pre-1980s can contain asbestos in popcorn texture. We test before we touch anything.

Step 02

Protect the room

Plastic on floors, walls, doorways. Furniture moved or wrapped. House stays livable.

Step 03

Mist water

Ceiling misted, paused while water soaks the texture. Not soaking drywall.

Step 04

Scrape right

Flat scraper, right angle, controlled sections. No gouging, no chunks torn out.

Step 05

Light sand

Anything left behind gets sanded flush.

Step 06

Skim coat

Full ceiling skim to repair marks scraping leaves. Separates DIY from professional.

Step 07

Primer

Stain-blocking primer on the whole ceiling. Water stains, patch marks — all covered.

Step 08

Two coats paint

Ceiling white default. Two coats minimum. Clean edge wall-to-ceiling.

Timeline

Single room: 1–2 days.
Whole-house ceiling removal: 4–7 days, staggered so part of the house stays usable.

Frequently asked

Asbestos — do I need to worry?
Only if your house was built before 1983 and popcorn has never been tested or removed. We test on day one. Most post-1985 homes in Broward are clear.
How messy is it?
Very — if not done right. With proper plastic, water misting, and section-by-section scraping, dust stays contained to the work area.
Can I stay in the house?
Usually yes — we isolate one room at a time. Whole-house jobs: plan around common areas being offline for a few days.
Can you just remove the popcorn and I'll paint?
We can — but don't recommend it. Ceiling needs skim coat and primer before paint. Paint without skim shows every scrape mark.
What about cracked drywall after removal?
Sometimes popcorn hides damage. We repair drywall (included), skim, prime, paint. We tell you day one if scope expands.
Can you change the ceiling color?
Yes. Any color. Most owners stay white or soft off-white because it makes rooms feel taller.
Does removal improve home value?
In most South Florida markets, yes — flat ceilings read updated, popcorn reads dated. Real estate agents often recommend removal before listing.
